To assist in moving abroad, expats (individuals who are on an expatriate contract) are usually provided Relocation Benefits.

While Relocation Benefits are a one-time support, expats could also receive ongoing assignment support.

Ongoing expat benefits or assignment benefits are meant to assist (and incentivize) you while living abroad.

These are typically provided for the entire duration of your expat assignment.

Common Expat Benefits Offered

  • International Medical Insurance
  • Tax Filing Support
  • Housing Support
  • School Support
  • Home Leave
  • Storage
  • Car Benefit
  • Club Membership

International Medical Insurance

You’d normally be enrolled under an international medical insurance plan.

Since your home country medical plan would typically be limited to local coverage, then being enrolled in an international medical plan is the way to cover your medical needs while being abroad.

Tax Filing Support

Another common benefit is having ongoing tax filing support for the entire duration of the assignment, not just a one-time filing service, c/o an accounting or tax firm.

Housing Assistance

There could also be direct cost or cash support toward the cost of housing.

Whether it’s the company who pays the rent directly (based on a certain budget), or by being given cash allowance via payroll to cover accommodation needs.

School Support

If you have children, your employer could also offer to cover school fees.

This could be via direct payment (invoicing) or reimbursement (you pay first).

Typically, this is limited to Tuition Fees and any mandatory Transportation Fees (like school bus), but Enrolment Fees and other Miscellaneous fees may still be your personal responsibility.

Check on the company policy of who qualifies for dependent education assistance.

Depending on company policy, there may be limitations around age, location, type of school, or maximum amount of reimbursement.

Home Leave / Rest and Relaxation Flight

Home Leave are company-paid flights for you to visit your home location while on-assignment.

Storage

If you have items to be kept in a Storage facility back home, your employer could offer to pay for the warehouse and insurance costs of items while you are on-assignment.

Car Benefit

A company-provided car & driver service is sometimes offered; specially if the host location has a high security risk.

Club Membership

Some companies still extend Club Membership or reimbursement of Club Membership Fees for very senior level expats.

Tip #1: Housing Allowance

If it’s the company that pays for the house or rental payments directly with the landord or vendor: Check if there’s an HR / Global Mobility policy about rent encashment.

Rent Encashment is when you could receive a portion of the housing allowance in cash, if the rental accommodation that you choose is less than the maximum budget.

Tip #2: Reverse Home Leave

Ask HR if reverse home leave is also allowed.

For example, if your spouse or children stayed back home, would the company pay for their airfare to visit you in the host country?

Also check your company policy if unused Home Leave Flights are transferable to subsequent years, or if it’s forfeited when not taken.
